Celebrating Heroes: Honoring Inclusive Doctors on National Doctors Day

As National Doctors’ Day on March 30 draws near, we at Spectrum Medical take a moment to pause and reflect on the incredible dedication and hard work of physicians across the United States. With over one million doctors tirelessly working to improve the health and well-being of their patients, this day represents our heartfelt tribute to their unwavering commitment.

The Legacy of National Doctors’ Day

National Doctors Day, observed annually on March 30, honors the contributions of physicians across America. Officially designated in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, the day commemorates the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842. It’s a day to celebrate the advancements in medicine and the individuals who dedicate their lives to advancing the health and well-being of their communities.

As we celebrate National Doctors’ Day, let us take a moment to appreciate the LBGTQ+ inclusive doctors all around the country. Their dedication, especially in creating inclusive environments for all patients, is a beacon of hope and a model for the future of healthcare. Today, we honor their commitment, their compassion, and their unwavering support for the health and well-being of every individual they serve.

“Today and every day, we extend a heartfelt thank you to all doctors who care for every patient equitably,” said Spectrum Medical Care Center Director of Marketing and Community Engagement, Victor Avila. “The extra attention to the unique experiences of the LGBTQ+ community will go a long way in enriching our society and setting a new standard for healthcare.”

 The Importance of Inclusive Care

In the landscape of healthcare, the trust between patients and their primary care doctors is fundamental. This trust is what encourages patients to seek annual wellness visits and take preventative measures to safeguard their health. Yet, for LGBTQ+ patients, a single negative experience in a healthcare setting can discourage them from seeking the necessary care they deserve. This underscores the importance of the efforts by our providers at Spectrum Medical and their peers throughout the city, who tirelessly work to support LGBTQ+ patients.

“Patients are more likely to visit their doctor for annual wellness visits and to take other preventative measures if they trust their primary care doctor,” said Jose Rodriguez, MD, Medical Director at Spectrum Medical Care Center. “Sadly, the data shows that LGBTQ+ patients may forgo preventative care because of one bad experience in a healthcare setting, which is why on National Doctors Day, we are especially appreciative of our peers across our city who go the extra mile for LGBTQ+ patients.”

Addressing Historical Issues Within LGBTQ+ Healthcare

Historically, the LGBTQ+ community has faced significant barriers in accessing care, leading to poorer health outcomes compared to their cisgender heterosexual peers. The stress from these disparities can further exacerbate both mental and physical health issues. Taking inclusive measures as healthcare providers can help dismantle these barriers and make healthcare more equitable.

Small Gestures, Big Impact

At Spectrum Medical, our focus on inclusivity is evident in the details. From highlighting LGBTQ+ healthcare, sexual health and gender-affirming care as clinical interests to inquiring about pronoun preferences and acknowledging all gender expressions, these gestures significantly contribute to our mission. Recognizing the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, avoiding stereotypes, and dedicating time to understanding community terminology and culture are vital steps toward creating a welcoming healthcare environment. Moreover, simple adjustments in our paperwork, like including gender identity, preferred pronouns, and preferred name, help our patients feel seen and respected.

A Heartfelt Thank You

This National Doctors’ Day, we at Spectrum Medical extend a heartfelt thank you to all doctors who provide equitable care to every patient, regardless of their background. The extra attention to the unique experiences of the LGBTQ+ community not only enriches our society but also sets a new standard for healthcare. It’s a reminder that in our journey toward health equity, every gesture counts.
