Early diagnosis and consistent care can help people living with HIV stay healthy and supported long-term. While there is currently no cure for HIV, advances in treatment allow many individuals to live long, healthy lives with proper care and medication support.
Treatment typically includes antiretroviral therapy (ART), a personalized combination of HIV medications designed to support long-term health and help individuals achieve undetectable status.

Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U)

Throughout your treatment, we regularly conduct blood tests and medical examinations to ensure that your medication effectively controls your viral load (the amount of HIV in your blood). Achieving and maintaining an undetectable viral load is not only a significant milestone in HIV treatment but also a cause for celebration. This milestone, known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable), means that people who reach and sustain an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV to others.

  • What is HIV?

    HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a viral infection that attacks the immune system, weakening its ability to fight infections and diseases. It is most commonly spread through unprotected sex and sharing needles. Regular testing for HIV is crucial for early detection, especially since some people may not know they’re infected.

  • What are common early symptoms of HIV?

    Within two to four weeks of HIV infection, you may experience flu-like symptoms such as:

    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Rash
    • Night sweats
    • Muscle aches
    • Sore throat
    • Fatigue
    • Swollen lymph nodes
    • Mouth ulcers

  • What should I expect during my first visit for HIV care?

    You will meet with one of our trained providers, who will review your health history, discuss any concerns you have, and work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your life. Depending on your recent medical history, they may also explain how antiretroviral therapy (ART) works for you and order blood tests to check your viral load/other health markers.

  • Do I need HIV care if I don’t have symptoms?

    Yes. While HIV can be present in your body without noticeable symptoms, early treatment can prevent the virus from causing significant damage to your immune system. Similarly, regular HIV care can reduce your long-term health risks while preventing transmission to partners.

  • How long does it take for HIV medication to become effective?

    Many people begin seeing their viral load decrease within days to weeks after starting antiretroviral therapy (ART). For some, achieving an undetectable viral load may take several months of consistent treatment, depending on factors such as medication regimen, overall health, and staying connected to care.

    While daily oral medication remains one of the most common forms of HIV treatment, treatment plans can vary based on your individual healthcare needs.

    During your HIV care visits, a Spectrum Medical provider will help guide you through your treatment plan, monitor your progress, and discuss what to expect throughout your care journey.

  • Can I still have sex while receiving HIV care? How does Spectrum Medical’s HIV care protect the health of my partner(s)?

    A key goal of Spectrum Medical’s HIV care is helping you maintain an undetectable viral load through ART. Because of U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable), individuals who maintain an undetectable viral load have effectively no risk of sexually transmitting HIV to their partners.

    At Spectrum Medical, our HIV care services also include education, testing, and prevention support for partners of people living with HIV, including access to PrEP and PEP. We always encourage open conversations with your partner(s) about prevention tools and sexual health strategies, including condoms, treatment as prevention, and PrEP.

  • What happens if I miss a dose of my HIV medication?

    Missing doses can increase your viral load and reduce how effective your medication is overall. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but do not double up.
