Created by Congress in 1992, the 340B Drug Pricing Programs allows qualifying healthcare organizations to buy medications at significantly reduced prices. This helps organizations stretch limited resources and reach more patients.

Here’s how it works: when someone fills an eligible prescription, an insurer’s reimbursement might exceed the organization’s cost for the medication. After expenses and pharmacy fees, any remaining funds can go back to the organization to support their community. That’s where 340B offers a community benefit. Instead of simply lowering the cost of prescriptions at the counter, the program creates more resources to fund critical services like testing, community education, or patient advocacy.

Starting November 3, 2026, Johnson & Johnson will generally limit affected federally funded clinics to one local pharmacy partner, plus one specialty pharmacy, for access to its discounted medications.
