Ray, communications and community development lead at Spectrum Medical, hosts Rocko Cook, a public health professional and longtime leather community activist, for an in-depth exploration of the leather and kink communities. Rocko, who has been active in the leather community since 1990 and currently runs DISH AZ (Detailing for Improved Sexual Health in Arizona), discusses the community’s history, values, and contemporary role in sexual health advocacy. The conversation spans the leather community’s origins post-WWII, its near-decimation during the HIV/AIDS crisis, and its modern emphasis on consent, mentorship, and radical acceptance. Topics include the puppy play community, various leather clubs in Phoenix, the importance of sobriety spaces, and advances in HIV prevention including PrEP, PEP, and U=U messaging.
